Daniel Hollister chosen for National Team!

May 2006

So what has Daniel Hollister our soon to be World Champion been up to since Herbert Retail provided some much needed sponsorship to aid his quest for this ultimate prize?

Daniel has recently taken part in a competition with the England team in Rotterdam, the Dutch open. This was the Golden League event. Daniel explains "this is like ‘the Grand Prix’. There are four competitions over the year and at each competition if you win a fight you get points. These points are then collected over the year and can turn into money! "

Shortly after this Daniel took part in the Karate England National Championships, in Pondsforge, Sheffield at the International Sports Arena. This was a major competition as it was part of the selection process for Daniel to be chosen for the England team. He won a bronze medal for ‘Male minus 80kg’ category. After this competition Daniel received an email saying he had been picked for the National Team – He was naturally overjoyed!

On 8th-9th April, Daniel attended a training meeting at Bisham Abbey with the national team. At the training camp he made the choice to drop a category to Male minus 75kg. For Daniel to reach his target weight he is on a very strict diet and hopes to drop to 75kg by April 24th.

His next challenge is the European Championships. This competition takes place from 5th to 7th May in Norway. He has a week of pre-training at Bisham Abbey. On the Saturday and Sunday about five or six individual fights will take place, and an additional five team fights, in order to win the European Championships.

Daniel explained that the next World Championships are in 2008 and he is on track to secure the World Champion title that year!

The upcoming events for this year include the World Championships in November, but even sooner than that the Regional Championships in June, which are to be held in Paris. The Regional Championships are where the best fighters from all over Europe come to compete. Each country is then split into the regions of its country i.e. The UK are split into three – North, South and Midlands.

We wish Daniel the Best of Luck for his upcoming competitions

Herbert Retail sponsors future World Karate Champion

Herbert Sponsors Karate Champ

Daniel Hollister pictured with our Tesco Account Manager Birte Mortinson is planning to take the World Championship Karate title.

As most professional sports men and women in this country know, the challenge to succeed in the sporting arena is a mix of dedication to training as well as having to continue with a full time job to finance their chosen sport.

Herbert Retail took the opportunity to help Daniel with his training fees, and will be keeping a keen eye on the future world champion as he progresses.

Apart from a rigorous training schedule every day of the week, 23 year old 1st Dan Black Belt Daniel who lives with his parents in Cheshunt works full time for Tesco as a Central Promotions Executive base at their Head Office.

Fortunately Tesco has a Gym on site and provide free membership to Daniel as part of their sponsorship where lunchtimes and evenings that's where you'll find him, unless of course he is out on a 3-5 mile run, or at the Karate Club which as a EKGB Qualified Coach he is the Chief Instructor and trains a mixed group of members with an age range of 5 up to adult.

The weekends offer little rest, as a member of our national team and Midlands England Regional Squad member, a mix of England squad training and competitions soon fill up his calendar, his latest achievements include an individual bronze and a team gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand as well as a placing in the quarter finals held in Paris competing with 51 other countries.

Daniel first took up the sport aged 7, that was after an attempt at boxing but he found it hard to find a sparing partner……perhaps they knew something.

Why karate? Many people first think that it is all about self defence but as Daniel is quick to point out it is a very disciplined sport that teaches you self respect as well as excellent for socialising.

Daniel sites his ambitions as being part of our national team when they are placed in the European Championships as well the all time goal of taking the 2009 World Championship Title.
